John Hoar paintings done at the earlier workshop near Tavistock.

John Hoar workshop near Tavistock, watercolour and line and wash.

We had another workshop with John Hoar a few weeks ago, where he gave us a demonstration in watercolour, for which we then had to try and follow, and then a snow scene done with line and wash, his wife kept us topped with hot tea and coffee, and cakes ect which she had baked the night before, at lunchtime we wandered over to the village pub for a cooked lunch and to discuss how we're getting along, the following is my effort, I will put John's up on the next post.

First ever acrylic painting done by me, St Aubin harbour Jersey

This is my first attempt at an acrylic painting, it is of St Aubin harbour Jersey, found that the fast drying of the medium quite a challenge, but found that creating a stay wet palette was a considerable help, not totally convinced of the medium, but was satisfied with the end product, any hints or comments would be welcome.

Oil painting using just the three primary colours, Postbridge clapper bridge Dartmoor.

Tried this oil painting by just using the three primary colours, a great way of learning how to mix colours and to make you think more, used a tinted board to give a sense of mood and unify the scene, was quite pleased with the outcome, the scene itself was the clapper bridge at Postbridge on Dartmoor.

West Dartmoor Art group 2013 exhibition from 13th-21st July, Peter Tavy village hall.

This subject is not my favourite, but I thought I would try it in a loose style after seeing the roses in our garden and the sunlight on them, which was reflecting all the different colours onto their petals.

This painting and previous recent posts will be displayed at our annual art exhibition starting on Sat 13th July until the 21st July both dates inclusive, from 10.00am daily free entry at the Peter Tavy village hall just outside Tavistock.

River Tavy at Bere Ferris watercolour from a plein air sketch

Taken from a plein air sketch I completed at Bere Ferris last week with some of the members of the Buckland Monochorum art group, we had a lovely evening of painting with the weather turning out nice, unfortunately the midges started their blood sucking activities, so we decided it was time to retire to the pub.

Barges on the Medway Watercolour in the style of Edward Wesson.

Here I have tried a watercolour in the style of Edward Wesson of Barges sailing up the Medway, tried to be minimal in the brush strokes I use with as little detail as possible [ I still feel as if I need to add more work, to know when to stop is the hardest thing ]

This is a watercolour and ink painting that I completed from a plein air study of the Drake Manor Inn at Buckland Monochorum, the Plein air study was done last Monday evening before retiring into the pub itself, the weather was fairly overcast with the threat of rain, I used a bit of artistic licence to introduce a sunny morning.

Workshop with Arnold Lowrey last week Storm at the Stone

We had a workshop last week at Buckland Monochorum church hall with Arnold Lowrey, who is a professional artist of considerable years experience, he worked on a very large scale using a very loose technique in watercolour, I tried to replicate his techniques using my own subject matter but on a smaller scale, this was my effort. "Merlot" dog portrait in watercolour

What a great name for a dog, this is a watercolour that I have just completed of a friends dog named "Merlot" I have tried to do it in a loose style without going overboard with detail, but still capturing the dogs personality.
